The Richard Dawson Monument (known locally as “The Monument”) was built in 1810 and constructed of Ashlar Sandstone standing 60ft high. The monument supports two carvings on opposite sides showing the coat of arms and the motto of the Dawson family “always propitious”. It was erected by local constituents to mark the election of the landlord as a Member of Parliament.
In recent years the monument has fallen into disrepair, the pointing on the plinth was disintegrating with ivy growth on the column. A Rural Renewal Scheme Grant to restore the memorial in memory of Richard Dawson MP was given in 1999.
TKB Southgate Associates were brought on board to assist with the restoration of the Monument. It is our brief to ensure that all work carried out on this project will be strictly in accordance with Best Conservation Practice. We produced detailed specifications and methodologies to ensure works are completed in the correct manner.
